IAM/AST 4Q Report: IBM, LG and Nokia among top patent sellers in bumper Q1 for deals

The US patent deals market saw a big jump in activity in the first quarter with both the number of deals and the amount of assets changing hands experiencing notable increases. According to the latest quarterly analysis by AST,  there was a total of 340 deals in January to March involving 6,525 assets, 305 sellers and 303 buyers. That makes it the biggest quarter in terms of deals since AST started its tracking in 2010.

In terms of assets, meanwhile, it was the busiest three-month period since the third quarter of 2018. Of course, most of this dealmaking happened before much of the US entered into a lockdown because of the covid-19 pandemic and it’s not clear yet just what sort of long-term impact that might have on the secondary market.
